If you are having problems, pray for help. If the difficulty has already passed, pray in thanksgiving. Whatever it was, bad or good, keep praying. But what should we do in those cases where God’s response to our pray is silence, when God is dumb, more silent than the grave? Faced with the silence of God, most of us get discouraged, we lose the sense of what we are doing when we see ourselves kneeling there trying to communicate with nothingness, we hit rock-bottom, questioning even the very existence of God Himself. This mixture of anxiety and rage, aggression and distress, leads us to fight with God. And the longer the response is delayed, the more absurd it seems to pray.
So what can you do if you pray and the response is delayed? Cleary fighting with God is not the answer; that would be a waste of our only lifejacket in the stormy sea. No, what we should do is to live in faith, put into practice what we believe; this is the time to show our trust in God; It is no longer just believing about God but believing, trusting, in God. In this Sunday’s gospel we profess that “God will surely do justice for his elect, who cry out to him day and night, even though he delays to help them. I assure you that he will speedily do them justice” (Lc 18, 7-8). Therefore, from now on, what we must do is convince ourselves that although it seems that God, by staying silent, remains distant from our problems, we have to look beyond this and understand that his answer is already at work, his reaction to our prayer is taking place and that we will see it materialize in God’s time, without needing a lot of talk or soothing promises. That is why God’s response is silence. So let us believe in God, and believe in the power of our prayer.
Si tienes problemas, ora pidiendo auxilio. Si ya pasó la dificultad, ora agradeciendo. Sea lo que fuese, malo o bueno, ora. Pero qué hacemos en aquellos casos en donde la respuesta de Dios a nuestra invocación es silencio, cuando Dios calla y se queda más mudo que una tumba. Ante el ‘silencio de Dios’ la mayoría de nosotros se desanima, le perdemos el sentido a arrodillarnos ahí tratando de comunicarnos con la nada, tocamos fondo al punto de cuestionar incluso hasta la existencia de Dios mismo. Esta mezcla de ansiedad y rabia, de agresividad y desconsuelo nos lleva a pelearnos con Dios. Y entre más se demora la respuesta, más absurdo nos parece orar.
¿Qué hacer si oras y la respuesta se demora? Obviamente no es pelearnos con Dios, eso es desperdiciar nuestro único salvavidas en aquel mar de tormento. No, lo que hacemos ante la demora es ‘vivir la fe’, poner en práctica lo que creemos, aprovechar la oportunidad para demostrar nuestra confianza en Dios; este es el espacio no solo para creer ‘en’ Dios sino para creerle ‘a’ Dios. Y es que el evangelio de este domingo nos revela que “Dios, ¿no hará justicia a sus elegidos, que claman a él día y noche, aunque los haga esperar? Les aseguro que en un abrir y cerrar de ojos les hará justicia” (Lc 18, 7-8). De ahora en adelante, lo que debemos hacer es convencernos en que aunque parezca que Dios se mantiene al margen de nuestros problemas al quedarse en silencio, debemos ver más allá y comprender que su respuesta ya está obrando, su reacción a nuestra oración está ocurriendo y la veremos materializada en el tiempo de Dios, sin tanta palabrería ni promesas calmantes. Por eso es que la respuesta de Dios es silenciosa. Creámosle a Dios, creámosle al poder de nuestra oración.
